Ask A Recruiter—You Asked And We Answered!
What is it really like to work at Textron? How can I stand out as a candidate? What should you ask in an interview?
We invited our Instagram followers to send us the questions they’d ask a Textron recruiter. We brought those questions to Amelia from our university recruiting team. Here’s what she had to say.
LIFE AT TEXTRON
What’s it like to work at Textron?

One of the things that makes working at Textron interesting is that there’s always something new to learn and someone new to learn from. As a global company with different businesses, products and teams around the world, there are opportunities to explore new interests and gain exposure to different parts of the organization.
Depending on your role, you might find yourself collaborating with a completely different function, learning about a new part of the business, or seeing how your work contributes to a much larger project. And because innovation is such a big part of what we do, there are always new challenges to solve and ideas to explore.
Our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are one way to connect with people outside your immediate team, build community, and hear perspectives you might not encounter in your day-to-day work.
That’s what I think makes working here interesting. There really is always another project, connection, or experience around the corner, and you never quite know where one of those opportunities might lead you.
What surprised you when you started working at Textron?
What surprised me most was how many opportunities there were to get involved beyond my core responsibilities. Working on projects outside of my day-to-day role allowed me to develop new skills, collaborate with different teams and gain a broader understanding of the business. Those experiences pushed me outside my comfort zone and helped shape my professional growth. For someone early in their career, being open to those opportunities can be one of the best ways to learn and discover new interests.

Beyond technical skills, what helps engineers get the most out of their experience at Textron?
I’d give the same advice to someone in any part of Textron. Stay curious and take initiative. Your technical skills are important, but you’ll learn a lot by seeing how other people approach their work and by taking the time to understand the projects and processes around you.
If something interests you, ask how you can get involved. It could help you build a new skill or discover a direction you hadn’t considered.
APPLYING AND INTERVIEWING
I don’t have much professional experience yet. What can I include in my application?
More than you might think. Don’t underestimate the value of your classroom projects, student organizations, volunteer work, and extracurricular activities. Many of the skills our teams seek in early-career candidates are developed through these experiences, including collaboration, leadership, problem-solving, project management, and adaptability.
Be specific about your contribution. What challenge did you face? What did you do? What did you learn? We want to understand the skills you’ve built and how you might use them in a role at Textron.
What should I ask my interviewer?
Ask what you genuinely want to know about the work and the team. A few good starting points are:
- – What does success look like for someone in this role?
- – What kinds of projects could I contribute to?
- – What opportunities are there to learn or explore other areas of Textron?
The interview is your chance to get a clearer picture of the opportunity and decide whether it fits your goals.
How long does the hiring process take?
It typically takes two to four weeks after you submit your application, though timing can vary by role. If our recruiting team would like to move forward, they’ll reach out about next steps. Current employees can also check their application status through the internal Textron jobs portal.
At Textron, you can build a career that spans industries and drives real innovation. It starts with you. Discover our open roles and apply today.
